I spoke NFTs & IP with @megan_crypto at @AIBC_World. Here’s the rundown:
1️⃣ IP has been around pre-internet. It’s been widely used by creators in entertainment, books, leisure, art. But IP has always been centralized. With NFTs & blockchain, we now see IPs being decentralized
2️⃣ Centralized vs. Decentralized IP – In centralized IP ownership, a single entity owns all of the IP, names, characters, etc. In a decentralized IP, other people can also own IP from the franchise like @BoredApeYC. Granted BAYC still owns the name, marks, & rights to BAYC & Curtis, the community now has characters they can work on their own without necessarily going through Yuga for approval. Another case is allowing participation in the governance & decision making like what @nounsdao is doing
3️⃣ NFTs IP used IRL – I came ready with my Jay Baby @bugattigrp bag & new @d_collectiverse shirt since the fireside chat wanted to cover how NFT IPs can be used IRL. My experience in licensing my IP to IRL businesses is one of the use cases for IP – but it’s not the only one. Here’s those covered in the session:
– licensing to Brands
– building your own business with NFT IP like @BorednHungry & @ApeBeverages (both expanding globally!)
– making them characters in shows, movies, games, stories like what @storyverse_xyz is doing
– making them your digital identity/brand
– making them a stand-alone character/brand (e.g. @TheRealDrBombay vs @SnoopDogg)
4️⃣ If I’m a web2 business, why will I launch a brand with monkey jpegs or NFTs? A few reasons:
– The ape community is a great set of initial supporters for your business
– Ownership of an asset with some brand recall already that you can build around
– If your business believes in crypto & web3, an NFT IP can help convey this message to the potential customers
An example of a business that built something out of the points above is @adidas. @altsbyadidas used Indigo Herz, their Bored Ape, as their brand’s main icon
5️⃣ What’s the future for NFT IPs? No one can predict the future but I think NFT IPs will be more prevalent as more builders build businesses/brands/personalities/content during the bear market. I think we’ll eventually see more NFT IPs in mainstream media as well. @TheSimpsons poster with BAYC, Punks, Doodles, & Cryptokitties is just the start 👀
